... hi there, usually i belong on the oboe board, but i've got a question for you single reed players ... i'm asking on behalf of our band single reed players, please can you help?
... what suggestions for additional help building single reed embouchure as well as actual practice time on instrument ... oboe players can practice on a piece of drinking straw, is there a great do it anywhere, take it anywhere, fit it in any spare moment type of exercise clarinetists & saxo players can do to speed up & firm up their embouchure development?
thanks :-)

The drinking straw trick, when mouthpiece-only/long-tone practice is not possible, has worked well for me over the years.

I don't know how he managed to do it, but my one adult student has convinced his wife that chewing oatmeal cookies is highly beneficial to his soprano sax playing....

Now, if I could just persuade my wife that milkshakes at the other end of that straw are... well, you know -- fat chance!!!

I can't remember which, but one of our posters keeps a mouthpiece with reed attached to it in the car and holds it in his mouth as he drives to/from work and other places. It's all black and probably not noticeable at all by other drivers (he claims it looks like he's simply smoking a cigar, but since I've never seen it, I ain't gonna say it does or doesn't). In any event, I've seen people attempting to do some pretty wierd stuff while driving (actually caught one woman stuffing her bra on the way somewhere. Boy was that an awkward moment . . . ) So keeping a mouthpiece there for short drives I'm sure wouldn't be disastrous.

Ooo. You're right Dave. I didn't even THINK about the chance of it getting chipped if it was out of the case at the time!!!!

[grin]

PS - Just kidding. I know what you mean. Airbag into mouthpiece into face might not be the best thing . . . .
