 Interesting 'classical?' CD (non-clarinet related)

I hope this is allowed . . . (MODS: there is a mention when I did a search, but it's 4 years old and not in a thread dedicated to it)

I recently found a cd by a band called "Apocalyptica'. I just fount it interesting, as it's a group of three classically trained cellists (whom I believe are ALL graduates of Sybelius Academy in Finland) who hooked up amps and mics to their cellos and recreate their renditions of hard rock and heavy metal (metallica and the like).

The one I have is Inquisition Symphony. I think it's excellent. I found it a very refreshing way to listen to some favorites of mine with a new twist. No vocals (on this CD anyway). Simply, hard cello rockin'.

Just thought maybe some of you might be interested in hearing what happens when (and I paraphrase from the website) Prokofiev meets Pantera, or when Shostakovich meets Slayer.

If you're interested in listening, their website has plenty of 30 second streaming sound bytes, and a few full streaming videos (all in .ram format so realplayer will have to be installed on your computer at some point . . . or 'Real Alternative' for you other codec geeks out there!)

[EDIT] three or four cellos. Seems to me they fluctuate a bit with members.

Interesting idea!

Which reminds me... I've always wanted to transcribe some Joe Satriani songs for clarinet and find some recital where I can play them. "Always With You, Always With Me" would be pretty tasteful. Don't know if "Satch Boogie" is workable...

They've also done a lot of stuff of Metallica's.

BobD.

Thanks VERY much. I have to say I'm THRILLED to see that "Oye como va" can be performed on clarinets! Lord knows I've had to hear that song more times than any mortal man should ever have to at EVERY family get-together I've ever been to. Maybe one day I'll have to find some other players and surprise them with this arrangement . . . . . !!!! A little payback. CLARINET-STYLE!!!! [grin]
