 Artie Shaw Solo-- Stardust
Author: Celeborn
Date:   2005-08-20 22:04

I'm working on figuring this out now, but playing along with the recording I think I might have done in the wrong key. If I'm right it starts on F sharp(not concert pitch, clarinet pitch). Does anyone know what note it starts on?

We always played SD in 5, flats that is, Hoagy's key, I believe, on piano, !! I was told it was all on the blacks ! On an Eb horn, alto/bari sax, I started from a high A [a D on a Bb cl], for the chorus, almost never played the ?verse?. I'll check to see where Artie put it, prob in 5, tho. Help, you jammers, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

There are countless versions of Stardust in all keys.

The standard fake book key is C major (D major for Bb clarinet)

In the concert key of C major, the opening 3 pick-up notes are B, C, C#.

For Bb clarinet, in the key of D major, the opening 3 pick-up notes are C#, D, D# ...GBK

Artie Shaw's Self Portrait boxed set contains five CD's. Every CD except number three has its own rendition of Star Dust.

If I remember correctly on Artie's recording I believe the band starts out in one key (5 flats or concert C) then just before Artie starts his solo they modulate to concert F, G for Bb clarinet. His pick up notes are F#,G,G#. The real high note he goes up to is double high concert A above the staff (B on the clarinet).

For what it's worth, I've got an old xeroxed-many-times copy of a lead alto/solo clarinet part transcribed from the recording, and the clarinet portion is in concert A, exactly as JimV indicates above.

I've played the Stardust solo before, and the clarinet solo does indeed start on the clarinet's F#.

The version I have here goes up to B6 - on some recordings Shaw does a little turn up to C7.

I played on a session with Paul Grosney's Big Band. We had Henry Cuesta come in and guest on some tracks, and he did a personal interpretation of the transcribed version.

Thanks for all your help. The specific recording, I should have mentioned, was made in Hollywood, on October 7, 1940. My transcription went up to B6 as well, so I guess I was right!

"Regarding Henry"

Back in the mid sixties, the UW Marching Band had an overnight stay in Indianappolis and a bunch of us went down to the lounge to hear the Jack Teagarden Band. Most memorable that evening was the wonderful trumpet playing of Don Goldie (I bought a recording) and the gracious, very talented young clarinetist who actually let me play a few licks on his clarinet that evening. (I remember his reed seemed quite hard)

A couple of years ago, I took my mother to the Crystal Grande in Wisconsin Dells where the Lawrence Welk Show was being presented featuring many of his TV alum, one of them being his longtime favorite clarinetist, Henry Cuesta. After the show, during which Henry's clarinet playing was simply great, I finally had a chance to ask him a question that I had wonderd about for years--was he the clarinetist that I had heard with Jack T in Indiana so many years ago? Henry's eyes lite up as he promptly replied, "It was me!!" Afterwards, we spent a fair amount of time talking "shop" and he still was just as kind (he never stopped smiling) as I remembered him being so years ago to a bunch of loud, overly spirited UW Marching Bandsmen on tour.

Sadly, not long after that mid-winter Wi Dells show, Henry passed away, but he will always be remembered not only as a great clarinetist, but also (and perhaps, more importantly) as a kind and gracious human being who didn't allow his success to "go to his head".

Aah, Hoagy Carmichael's immoral Sawdust.

Artie Shaw was a major league technician and worked hard to make every tune sound easy. I'm not surprised at all that he tossed it off in an extreme key.

Would you like to share your favorite vocal recording of Stardust? There's a young singer here in the UK - Katie Melua - and she sings it on her 'singles' disc. Really lovely. It's got me curious as to other vocal renditions.

I don't suppose there is sheetmusic for a clarinet solo - not having Celeborn's ear, I'd like to read it.

Thanks,
Elizabeth

just wanna play:

Louis Armstong's version (vocal and trumpet) still reigns supreme for me. Either take will do (Oh memory!)

Beyond that, you should listen to Coleman Hawkins' 1945 Capitol recording with Howard McGee on trumpet - the way Hawkins plays the verse and then hands it off to McGee is one of the most thrilling moments in music.

Oscar Pettiford did a particularly beautiful solo bass recording (with piano back up) in the 1950s(?).

And then there's Dizzy Gillespie's Minton recording (with Don Byas on tenor) from around 1942, maybe later. Is that Monk on piano?

Hmmm! Well, I've got a recording of Hoagy doing it himself and I have never heard a better one. I can dig out the details if anyone is interested.

Another recording worth noting, is Bobby Knight's Great American Trombone Company, called Cream of the Crop. The notes say that it is the only time that Carl Fontana and Frank Rosolino recorded together. Without the CD in front of me, I believe it was recorded live at Dante's around 1978. It has a monster solo by Frank playing Stardust.

Justwannaplay--
The transcribed solo should be attached. The rhythms aren't perfect, but with Shaw's recording you should be able to nail them.

ooooh, thank you Celeborn - I shall have to get out my Artie CD and play along. Thanks to all the other suggestions for listening both vocal and instrumental - I would like to hear Hoagy singing it - any female voices out there?

If anyone is curious, you can hear Katie Melua sing it here:

The old songs are the best.

"Sorry,Liz, but Katie's not my cup of tea"

I think she is a little inexperienced in this style (not sure what you would call it - blues, jazz, bluesy jazz, 30s crooner?) and could have been coached more with it, but imo she does have a lovely voice and it's nice to hear a young singer do these older songs.

there's a wonderful recording of Helen Humes singing "Stardust" at a Mintons jam session from the early 1940s. She was great, and she's backed up by Don Byas on tenor and young Thelonius Monk.

Hard to find, but worth the search if you can.

My Hoagy cd is Bluebird 8333-2-RB and is titled "Hoagy Carmichael-Stardust and much More". A reissue produced by Orrin Keepnews- 1989 BMG Music. It contains three of Hoagy's versions of Stardust, great nostalgic liner notes and 21 total selections. Although I can appreciate some young singers' desire to do the oldies, if one hears Hoagy himself dong his song the challenge seems futile... especially his recitation version. Hoagy never learned piano fingering, never took a lesson.

Here's a PDF of a smudgy, oft-xeroxed, marked-up copy of a copy of a copy of a lead alto part, probably transcribed back in the 40s by some unknown musician, that includes the Shaw solo. Have fun, y'all.
