Other pros, do you practice during holidays?
Author: Alphie

I’m in the middle of the warming up period before the upcoming season after seven weeks without even looking at a clarinet. My family and I spent our holidays in our summer house in the countryside and this summer I just said no to all extra gigs so I didn’t see any reason to practice. Instead I spent 100% of my time to my other life doing all those other things we never have time to do otherwise, together with family and friends. I feel that I needed this long of a break after a tough last season and I haven’t missed playing. Now I feel nicely refreshed and ready for a new great season. Am I alone giving myself so much free time?

Nah, I dont think your alone, but its all about opportunity costs. That time with family (that is a great thing by the way) costs you to give up those months of improvment that wasnt made otherwise. However if you were down and in a slump then it could help. Good luck next year. The Best

Except for illness I've never layed off that much in my life. If it got to be so much of a chore that I needed that much time away, I'd quit.

I've avoided every outdoor gig this summer, but not practicing FWIW.

The legendary Principal Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Adolph Herseith (sp??), after cracking a note during a UW-Madison summer Music School clinic presentation, simply remarked, "Oh,Oh.....vacation chops". He explained that he was just returning from a northern Wisconsin musky fishing vacation (enroute to Chicago) and that he was a little "out of practice". For the rest of the his presentation, however, he played flawlessly--and, except for occassionally turning a bit red in the face (thus his nickname, "Red"), he made playing the trumpet seem quite effortless. However, from his "aside" remark to all of us in attendance, it would seem that even the virtuosic players are not always in top shape--and often, presumably, as a result of some much needed time off.

See the New York Philharmonic interviews linked at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=189540&t=189540. The interviewer asked that question to each of them and got an interesting range of answers.

for myself and many of my colleagues the "holidays" (such as they exhist) are often just an excuse to catch up with the "music to learn" pile, and do the jobs that we haven't had time to do (ie bill students, reface mouthpiece, fill out neglected bits of paper, meet with conductor to discuss tempi for up-coming concerto etc etc etc).
but even a devoted clarinet-nerd like me LOVES to take time off. Here in NZ the summer is shorter (as it is in the southern hemisphere due to the earths tilt... true!) and there are very few concerts/summer schools etc in January so it's very easy to take a bit of time off without it affecting up-coming concerts etc....
but at easter time i went for 4 days camping/surfing with my girlfriend, and as i had a recital a week later had to take an old clarinet along with me- twice a day i drove off to a secluded spot and played for 45min in the passenger seat! One afternoon i accidentally chose a favourite haunt for the local "petrol heads" and decided to move on after a series of "drive bys" by cars full of dodgy looking types....
at the moment i'm having a week of "low impact clarinet"- only about 45min a day of scales.
keep playing the good tunes

At least with my seven weeks off I'm one week shorter off than hornist Philip Myers of the NY Phil who takes eight weeks out of nine off. [cool]

I think it's a luxary having a 12 month salary not necessarily having to work extra in the summer just for the money. When I was a free lancer a holiday like seven weeks without playing was out of the question.

"Adolph Herseith (sp??), "......Herseth, I think.

Wow....on the opportunity cost thing. That's gotta be a tough call when you think about it from a business sense. How much is time with one's family worth! "A gig with the family"....a whole new ball game.
