I'm doing some research for a professor on the Brahms clarinet quintet, and in the process of trying to find the online searchable index of The Clarinet (has it disappeared, or did I forget where I found it?), I found an article in the Anthology section of the ICA website: Richard Muhlfeld - George Toenes, From The Clarinet, No. 23 (Summer, 1956). It's the 1956 that's got me confused. Was there an earlier Clarinet journal I didn't know about?

http://www.clarinet.org/journal/masterindex.txt - it hasn't been updated since I stopped being Webmaster of that site.

Yes, there was an earlier series of The Clarinet in the 1950s. The issues were the size of a "trade" paperback book and usually ran to 32 pages. I have a complete set, which I got on eBay from an old member's estate, and they contain lots of interesting stuff. I don't think there is an index of articles.

Conservatory libraries (Oberlin, for example) often have complete sets. You should also look at Woodwind World, from the 1950s and early 1960s, which I have a fairly complete set of, along with the clarinet materials from various other issues.

Symphony Magazine, from the late 1940s and early 1950s, had guest articles from various instrumentalists. I haven't been able to find an archive, but I think the clarinet articles were collected in a supplemental pamphlet, which I have, sent to subscribers of the first series of The Clarinet.

A PDF of the list of back issues of the current series of The Clarient, up through 2004, with summary tables of contents, is at http://www.clarinet.org/pdfs/journal/BK_Issue_Form.pdf.

You can sort Mark's index by volume, author or title by going to http://www.clarinet.org/journal/masterindex.asp.

There was an earlier Clarinet magazine published by James Collis who also published the Symphony and Woodwind magazines. These predated the International Clarinet Association. They were small sized, about 5" X 7" and had some excellent articles, by Brody, Hans Moennig, etc. The date of 1956 is correct.

I have several of the "Woodwind Magazine" issues of 1949, 50,51, given to me by a classical flutist, because of clar-related articles, Bettoney, early oboists etc. These also predate ICA and some music libraries may have complete files. Can find publisher if asked. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
