Hi yall
Having had several unexpected developments during my summer vacation, i was not able to get to my usual repairman. I am in need of a good professional repairman in the san antonio area... someone who does top notch work.. i can travel as far as houston, but not easily.

John Butler is the "go to" man. He is extremely capable, does exceptional work, honest, and one of the nicest people you will ever meet!!!

If you don't want to go to Houston, or it is too difficult for you, there is a good woodwind guy at Brook Mays in Austin. I think his name is Tony. You might have to call there and ask them about the guy everyone says is fantastic with clarinets. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
However, I can personally attest to John Butler's skills. He's done a great job for me in the past. So, the Sugar Land (a Houston suburb) deal might be worth the effort. He would be more likely to get to you. The Brook Mays guy would make you go through all the paper work hoops and then have to leave the instrument until it's finished and go back and get it. You can mail the clarinet to John and he'll get right to it and mail it back if you can't drive there in person.

Hi, I also live in San Antonio and share your woes. I would personally go to John Butler however there are a few options in SA. One would be Rex Bullock of Ed Myers USA music co. He had a woodwind tech there sometime ago that did great work. He is VERY reasonably priced and does pretty good work. He's been in this business a while. He still does repair work although ED Myers is a pad co.
there is Larry Mueller who is an Oboist but does great clarinet repair work as well as oboe, he works out of his house and might be pricey but will do a good job. You must know where to look. Good luck I hope this helps

tried John Butler, but he can't work me in in the time frame i am working with.. sorta tight...
i couldn't get it done earlier becuase of working on my wifes visa and before that was a very long season followed by a rather short vacation.. sigh

well the clarinet needs some general repading the top joint is in bad shape and 2 pads on the bottom joint and I don't think they will last till december in the Mexican climate and temperature changes I go through.
My bass needs an adjustment with the register mechanism, some of the key corks have fallen off and need to be replaced, I have done go arounds with the adjustment screws but it puts off a bit of the response and intonation, not to mention having to be readjusted almost every time i play the darn thing, sigh.. blah blah.
my problem is that I need both for next monday... so I am planing to do whatever tommorow... as a last resort I am planing on taking it to ALmo music they did some fast repair work on my sax 2 years ago that was okish... not the best, but better than nothing
i know sounds like i was procrastinating, but preparing the residence permit for my wife took all of my vacation... at least she can go to san antonio with me FINALLY.. 363 days of waiting and 10:30 hours of waiting in the consulate in CD Juarez...

I don't know anything about Larry Mueller as a repairman, but he's a fine oboist. He normally sits principal in the Corpus Christi Symphony and I've been very impressed with his playing.
