 outdoor performance attire

I have searched for, and read, previous postings on the issue of dress but I have a new question. I am part of a trio which is playing outdoors as part of an arts festival. The trio is fairly new and we are starting to perform more frequently. While the performance is outside, and it will be hot, we are having a difficult time deciding on appropriate attire. I would prefer black or black and white, the others are not in agreement. We're all females. What has been your experience, and what are your opinions on the subject?
Thanks -
Sue Tansey

3dogmom,
The quartet I played in (4 men plus occasional female vocalist) always wore white shirts and black pants. The vocalist dressed to suit the occasion, not necessarily in B & W.
I would rather be remembered for how I played than what I wore, but if the theme of the festival includes being colourful, that should be considered too. For a Christmas performance we would add something colourful, like "Santa" hats.
For some groups colour is part of their brand (e.g., the Blueman Group), so that a decision like this could affect the future of your trio and should be given careful thought.
Regards,
Hans

Go all white - you will stay cool while playing. Do have a "dress" outfit that the 3 of you agree on as that looks a lot more professional than a free for all. It makes you appear as an actual group, not 3 musicians that were hired for the gig.

I agree with David -

As a woman, I prefer to keep my look simple even in orchestra...however, I do dress it up for a recital or concerto situation.

Especially in a chamber group, a uniformed look is less distracting to the audience...even though how you play should matter most, looks do matter.

I think a white or light color in a solid - a cotten or linen/cotton blend would be the coolest fabric choices. Stay away from Polyester/lycra blends, as they trap in heat. You can certainly go sleeveless, but I'd keep the shirt with thick straps, or a cap sleeved style. Obviously, stay away from spaghetti straps or tube tops - as they can "malfunction" in lightweight fabrics.

A two piece with a longer skirt, or pants (even a loose capri) would work well if you don't find a suitable dress...summer concerts are usually more casual...but try to keep a uniformed look and nothing too short.

Men; matching color dress-suit pants (no Dockers or cords), formal, black low-quarter shoes, leather-paten leather, or animal skin okay (no penny loafers), white open colored dress shirts, bring solid-colored tie and sport jacket ready to put on, tie first, then jacket if semi-formal. No blacks; try to be transparent. Females can advise their own. v/r ken

While your colleagues might give you funny looks if you present it to them this way, this link has some interesting info about black/white in sunlight.

My advice, from personal experience ... wear clothing that's easily cleaned if you get pooped on by birds ...

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
