The ones I've seen/worked on were made in Germany by Schreiber & Sohne, and were sturdy in construction but mediocre playing-wise and the keywork was rather clunky-feeling.........which I suppose means they're fairly typical of other reputable plastic clarinets (e.g. Vito, Bundy). For playing outside, what the heck, why not?

Superior to Bundy in it's keywork (my opinion).
The newer ones look more like a wooden instrument as brushed plastic is "in vogue".
But none of em beat the "Forte Clarinet"

I'm using my teacher's very old plastic evette right now until my new clarinet comes.... I have to admit it has a very nice sound for a plastic. It's made in Paris, France (this one apprently).

The plastic Evette (as opposed to the E12, which it predates) AFAIK did not come in the brushed finish. As student instruments go, I think the Evette was pretty well-made (e.g, it had metal rings unlike recent B12's). I had one that I put Valentino pads on to make it waterproof and used as an outdoor instrument for a short while. I thought it played pretty well. I eventually sold it to a neighbor who, having suffered sticker shock at band instrument night, was looking for a less expensive alternative for her daughter.
You can probably pick one of these up on eBay for around $40 - $80. It will almost certainly need a good cleaning and probably at least some new pads and possibly corks but, at that price, you might want to take it on as a do-it-yourself project. If you're patient, though, you may be able to pick up a Vito V40 for $80 - $100. (I got one for $85.) IMO, that would be an even better buy.

I always wanted to get a V40 to have in my collection of clarinets, mostly to see if all their praise was justified.
Thus, last year on eBay, I was in the right place at the right time, and picked one up for $22. After a few tenon corks and 2 pads it was good to go. In addition, adding a Power Barrel to it transformed it into a very respectable instrument with nice projection and surprisingly good intonation. Just for my own amusement I recently used the V40 with my big band to see if anyone in the sax section could tell any difference. It blended fine and the sound carried nicely.
Other than the Forte clarinet (which is in a class by itself), the V40 was definitely one of (if not the best) plastic clarinet manufactured over the past few decades...GBK
