Edoardo Debenedetti - who is he?
Author: jo.clarinet

I'm writing programme notes on Berio's 'Lied' at the moment, and have almost completed them, but I can't find out any information at all concerning Edoardo Debenedetti, to whom the piece is dedicated.
I'd like to include a sentence or two about him, because he might have given the first public performance of 'Lied', or been a special friend of Berio's, or something along those lines. I've tried several books, and the internet, and have drawn a blank so far. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

He was Berio's nephew, as I recall -- or at any rate, a close family friend -- and the piece was written for him as a birthday present, because he was a clarinet student. (I'm pretty sure it was his nephew, but I'd want to check, as it was a long time ago.)

I know this because I was working in Italy at the time (March 1983) playing with and directing the Orchestra Regionale Toscana, of which Berio was artistic director; and Berio turned up at a rehearsal with this piece and a small tape recorder and wanted me to make a tape that he could give to his nephew with the manuscript.

I think the quality was pretty dreadful -- it was in a classroom at the music school in Fiesole -- but anyway, we did it.

Fantastic - thanks VERY much for the information, Tony. I was beginning to despair of ever finding out anything about him!

Hello Joanna,
by chance I googlesied myself and found that you were talking about me years ago. If you are still interested in that story we can chat about.
best regards Edb

Hello Edoardo,

I think many of us are interested in that story -- I certainly am!

Are you still playing? Did you play Lied very often when you were? Was it your birthday?.....:-)
