Recently acquired a used Buffet e-11(1987)and discovered low e and f# are badly sharp. Is this pretty common for these horns? Could it be because of hot and/or humid weather?

I'm not sure of the intonation tendencies on that instrument, if they are more resistant than the rest of the horn it may have a few leaks. Do the suction test and see if it's sealing.

a 66mm barrel fixes a lot of tuning issues on e-11's ; Vandoren 13 series mouthpieces will help too.

I don't know if this means anything, but I had an E-12 clarinet and I noticed it was always very sharp-- I had to pull out nearly to the cork on the barrel, the middle, and the bell. I finally got a custom barrel which was 66mm and that helped a bit, but it is sharper than I'd hope.

Every E-11 model I have encountered does not suffer from the flatness in these lower pitches as the R-13 does.

Thanks for all your comments. The instrument in general seems to be nicely in tune(almost too good) except for those lowest notes which, starting about low g, run from iffy down to a terrible e. I know every instrument has it's compromises and this model appears to be built for first section band people who don't play low notes(I've been told the e-11 is an "ensemble" instrument). Perhaps a new barrell or mouthpiece would help and it could use a tighter seal but I'm reluctant to put more money into it unless I'm sure it would fix the low notes relative to the rest of the horn. Maybe I'm just expecting an intermediate quality clarinet to play like a solo model.
