 bell size

Hi,

I'm a totally new beginner and I find that the yamaha ycl-250 has a smaller bell size compared to the jupiter 631.

I've already bought the yamaha, but would like to know if the bell size makes a difference to easeof blowing or sound?

Thanks for any help offered.

If it were me I'd stick with the Yamaha. A full answer to your question gets too complicated.

Are you comparing the inside or outside of the bell? My plastic Yamaha certainly has a bell that's smaller on the outside than my wooden Leblanc: I know because the Leblanc won't fit in the Yamaha case. I don't have the Yamaha with me to check, but I think the difference may have more to do with different thickness of material than with different inside dimensions.

Some manufacturers, Yamaha among them, make great play about special design features of their bells. Usually on the most expensive models, of course. Much of this is probably marketing hype.

The bottom line, as Bob has implied, is that the Yamaha plastic instrument is better respected than its Jupiter equivalent. That may be partly due to snobbery.

Bear in mind also that the bell has a rather limited effect on most notes. Play an open G. Take the bell off, and play it again. Hear the difference? Take the lower joint off and play it again. Hear the difference? Stick your finger in the end of the upper joint and play it again. Hear the difference? Now put it all together again and get practising!

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.
