I was wondering if anyone had experience playing the Lyons C Clarinet? I was wondering if it might be a possible substitute for a conventional C clarinet.

I am a clarinet teacher. This instrument is very good for little children. Up to 9 years. But not suitable as a C clarinet for adult clarinetists. Intonation is poor, clarion register sounds are "thin".

Better off with the Buffet E-11 C Clarinet (yeah, it's about $1000, but a lot better).

The Lyons has modified keywork so you can't play nearly as facile with it.

I have one. It's OK for students with small hands, but I wouldn't ask people to pay to hear me play it.

I was thinking about using it in a small ensemble if people bring in music that hasn't been transposed for Bb clarinet. I don't think I would use it at a gig.

kfeder -- I am curious about the way you phrased "a possible substitute for a conventional C". Is cost the reason you are looking for alternatives or are there other considerations?

Amati has some reasonably priced C clarinets that are on my "check out some day" list.

I had to return a C clarinet that did not work out. It may have gone out of adjustment during shipping. But it was kind of a hassle. And yes cost is a consideration.
