Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate the ease and simplicity of this site. Since taking up sax, and sampling the sax sites, I just want you to know that even though clarinet is a much more advanced instrument than sax, ....so is this web site...the saxophone sites have way too many "this and that's" and it's confusing. Rather than a "general" place to go, they're broken up into this category and that with sub-headings and blah blah.....so when you post....you forget just where it is you need to return to for an answer. You've taken the BBoard to a place that is exactly what it should be. Ask a question on one site.....return and get an answer or get told to do a SEARCH. AND the respondents even tell you where to go for the answer.
I guess we clarinetists ain't as anal as most think......

I agree this site is great, but if you are talking about SaxOnTheWeb, you don't have to remember anything, because you will get an email when someone replies to your message (which eliminates the need to even check) and in the email you have a link directly to your thread.

You mean like that little checkbox that says "E-mail replies to this thread, to the address above." when you post?

Yes.
I never said this option doesn't exist on this board.
I simply explained that you don't "forget just where it is you need to return to for an answer" like the original poster wrote.

I agree with the sentiment, of course, but comparing this board to a Yahoo board is like comparing a Buffet to a First Act.
Doubly so if you somehow plaster a First Act with porn spam.

Well, I’m the one who made the comparison with the Yahoo Bass Clarinet group, so maybe I should clarify where I was coming from.
Up until I discovered the Clarinet Bulletin Board I had never participated in a formal on-line discussion group. I have only been signed up about a month, but within the first couple of days after signing up I made it my home page. Then I promptly ordered a clarinet textbook from one of the sponsors.
Having just purchased a bass clarinet, I have checked out the bass clarinet group a couple times, but the format doesn’t tell me much so I really don’t use it and have not signed up as a member. If the site had been anywhere near as user friendly as this one I would probably have signed on.
Recently there has been some discussion on this board about the reliability of information on the internet, even from this group, versus printed materials from a library. Someone suggested that it pays to be wary of well-intentioned advice from strangers.
This board is a great resource if you use it with a little common sense. This morning I have been poring over some recent threads to help me choose some technical exercises for purchase. When, for instance, a name like Bauerman III keeps coming up in post after post, it means “pay attention.”
In a more global sense, this board is an illustration in the linguistic change in the meaning of the term “community.” There really is a clarinet community. Many of us don’t sit in a symphony orchestra next to good players who challenge us to play our best. The board is the next best thing.
It’s also kind of weird to experience this kind of community for the first time. At the beginning of this year NBC news did a feature on entertainers who died during 2004. They went overboard on Johnny Carson; nary a word about Artie Shaw, who died on December 30th. I complained in an e-mail and never received a reply. On the Clarinet Board “Artie” is one of those one word names, like Oprah.
Back to the point: It works so well because it’s done right.

Markael, many of the Bass fourm folk are also on this Bboard and will NOT tell you to go elsewhere for info, they will just nicely provide it..
