 organizing & storing music

I need a new way of organizing & storing sheet music and books. My previous system was some in an attache, some in a pile on top of the piano, some in a pile beside the piano, some in a pile on a chair, and the current stuff on the music stand. Well the pile on top of the piano just fell behind the piano -- It's time to organize! I tried a filing cabinet, but a lot of music is 9 X 12 and doesn't fit too well. Suggestions?

I can really relate to this. We have two young sons, one learning piano, the other the trumpet and recently, teaching himself my old guitar as well. Add to that a clarinet and saxophone.
Yes it's a mess!

The worst is probably the guitar music that I collected over many years. Trying to find anything is almost impossible.
So I got some ring binders and hundreds of those transparent A4 things (what are they called?) to hold each sheet.

I assume 9x12 is inches. That's about 21x30 cm. Isn't that A4? I thought filing cabinets were designed for that size.

Slowly, I'm filing all the sheet music into groups, starting with guitar, because it's the largest collection. A ring binder for each style: Classical, Baroque, South American..etc.
The plan is to do this for all instruments. I'll let you know how it went in ...about ten years. ;-)

Go to a place like Staples and get a filing box that is legal sized. Put the music in various filing folders alphabetically.

I have one of those right next to me when I teach for the easy to grab stuff. My collection of music is many thousands of pieces large and fits in 12 large legal sized drawers.

MSK,

Go to your closest IKEA store and get some of those cardboard bookshelf magazine holders (about 3 for $5). Cheap, plain, and they really work.
