For my newly-bought, but an old, crystal mpc, I found it hard to play with my usual 3 1/2 reed.
A 3 was better , and 2 1/2 reed was best, up to now.
Is it always the case? Do you use thicker or thinner reed for your crystal mouthpiece?

Completely depends on how open the facing is, and also how long the lay is too.
It has nothing to do with the material.

What brand crystal is it? any markings? david is right....has nothing to do with the material the piece is made of.....personally I've found that some of the older crystals....selmer....o'brien etc...aren't as good as the nw ones today.....Pomarico did make many of the olkder pieces......but the advances they've made are incredible....and Pomarico continues to research and develop prototypes in effort to improve thier products......
Bottom line....if the crystal you have works well with a #2....you've found the right reed......JG

Right, D B,, I use LaVoz medium or med soft reeds on my glasses [several sops, 2 B C's and Alto] since all are fairly wide tips and med-long lays. Also have and use reed trimmers ! Old sop crystals were [likely] made by O'Brien, who used the numbering system 2 [close] up to 5 {very wide]. Newer Pomaricos use 1,2,3 et al, I prefer 3, [or refaced similarily, by D S] and believe their "mellow or bright" refers to bore and baffle designs, better ask Riccardo about this. I really like them in preference to good H R's/plastics, for 'more mellow' tonality ??glass is heavier!! and may use Rovner [inverted] ligs for [yet] !!Darker?? sound, depending on what music is being played. The better the mouthpiece, the less fussy it is about reed selection. David B. is right, the material is immaterial!

Thank you all. As always, this board is really helpful.
Mine is a Vandoren, and I use a Rovner (EDII).
I don't think this crystal one will be my favorite any time soon, because I'm very happy with my 2-year old Viotto B45h.
But with summer coming (we're told it will be the hottest one in 10 years), I heard that crystal mpc is less prone to heat so the sound gets less sharp.
(Is that true?)
And it should look 'cooler' (literally). A nice consolation when to practice/play in a sticky hot summer days, I think.
