First off I was at the Toronto Symphony on the 5th, amazing concert..... Was anyone else their?.
But on to the reason I am posting, their is a mirror hanging up on stage and my director nor I could figure out what its purpose was.
If you were standing where the conductor was the mirror would be in line w/ you, or at least close to it on your right hand side. None of the musicians appeared to be angled strangely, so I couldn't see how it would of been for them.
Anyone have any ideas on what purpose it would of been serving?

Perhaps the conductor was vain?

heh, yes perhaps
As I think now, the only thing I can think of is that it let the people on the balcony see the rest of the stage.
Seems kind of silly but who knows.....

I'm thinking that it would have been up there to help project the sound better. Sort of like the difference when you practice in front of a window with the curtains open and when you practice with the curtains closed.

It could be a 1-way mirror, hiding a video camera. That lets the backstage people see what's going on and prepare for what's coming next. The green room could also have a screen to let the soloist know when to be ready, and there could also be a screen in the lobby for latecomers.
If there are any offstage players, it would also be for them.
It could also be an ordinary mirror to let the conductor know, without looking around, how long to wait for latecomers to be seated after the first piece (though usually the concertmaster does that).
