 "No first prize was awarded"

In the latest issue of the Clarinet, I read in the Clarinotes section that an International Clarinet Competition was held in Portugal and that no first prize was awarded.....anyone know why they would do that?

Or no unanimity in the jury- depends on how the voting system works

Obviously the bribes weren't enough. You obviously know nothing about southern Europe!

This actually happened at the Rampal flute competition sometime in the late 90's as well. From what I understand, this was done because one of the contestants had an instrument that was of lower quality than the others, and in fact in a state of disrepair. When this became known, the organizers felt that this could have affected the outcome of the competition. In the end they decided to award two second prizes, one going to this contestant, and the other to another flutist. However, the contestant with the poor flute, was awarded a portion of the first prize, which was a new flute.

Neidich, Cuper got 2nd and Yeh got 3rd in a Intl. Competition where they didn't award a 1st prize.

Somehow I think that the competition that year had jerks for judges.....

Or perhaps, because competitions are notoriously overdemanding, *no-one* played outstandingly well that day, in that competition.

That would leave well open the possibility that the judges weren't jerks.

It can happen;-)

I'd say JB Yeh is a pretty fantastic player...so I can't image that competition being subpar on any level.

I'll take Tony's word for it. He could have been there, heck - he could have been, or knew the judges for it.

All 3 players are/were great Top World Class players. If they had gone into obscurity than I could see it a lot more readily.

If you haven't heard Cuper, he's a monster.

Gee David - I thought you called the judges at that comp jerks...guess you weren't there but it sounded as if you were from your first repsonse.

I just commented because I know JB's playing fairly well, and I can't imagine him not being prepared to play the judges pants off. Any comp with players of that caliber, perhaps the judges couldn't choose an absolute winner.

No Sue, I wasn't there. But I know, knew Neidich's playing pretty well, and he is very, very consistant. That they gave 2 second prizes and a 3rd instead of maybe 2 first prizes and a second......

I wonder what happened the next time that competition occurred?
