Today's NY Times review of the Met's "Tito" gives special praise to the clarinet section. Here's a brief quote:
"His [Mozart's] orchestra embraces a new instrument, the clarinet, and does it in a big way, setting up elaborate conversations between pit and stage. Steve Williamson and James Ognibene were the splendid clarinet and basset-horn players."
How often do you see the clarinetists singled out by name for praise in an opera review?
Also nice to see that the venerable Times simply assumes that its readers know what a basset-horn is. Of course they do.
