 Reeds too soft?
Author: Aussiegirl
Date:   2005-04-30 01:57

Im currently playing on Rue Lepic Vandoren 3.5+ reeds on my clarinet, and at the moment im doing a couple of hours a day playing and im finding that im going through reeds really really quickly. Once i start on a new reed, most of these ones have been great for about an hour or so, and then they tend to get stuffy and not articulate properly. Ive tried going back to these reeds a few days later and they are still like this. Would upping my reed strength to a 4 help? Any ideas?
Thankyou! Fiona

Which mouthpiece do you use?? So, I can tell if your reeds seem like soft, or not.

But, I think that you might be biting into your mouthpiece. Keep your jaw open and do not let it close. This helps air folw better, and this helps reeds vibrate better, too.

Or, you can check the flat side of your reed. Use flat glass plate or Vandoren Glass Reed Resurfacer to check if it is warping, or not. If it is warping, I think that reeds feel stuffy and articulates poorly.

Everything 'RosewoodClarinet' said, but also: do you play on a single reed for more than an hour? That could easily lead to inappropriate softness of a reed because enzymes or something in your saliva actually 'eat' at the fibers in the reed. Try rotating your reeds more often if you don't already.

Tyler, I agree. Rotating reeds helps them break-in without reed's fiber destroyed by saliva.

If reeds, even hard ones, soaked completely with saliva by being played for hours, I think that these reeds could make them softer anyway. Also, these reeds could be dead quicker than ones with proper break-in process.

Play for at most 5-10 minutes a day on any given reed for the first week or so. An hour straight off is a good way to kill a reed.

You seems like having right choice of reeds with you mouthpiece. I thought the facing on selmer C85/120 is close and long. 3.5+ is fine with it, I think.

Good Luck!!
