While we're on the topic of rosewood clarinets...
I know you can special order a low Eb bass clarinet from Selmer in rosewood. If you had the $$, would they be able to make a rosewood low C bass clarinet??
I'm joining a group that seemingly will buy me anything I want.

Actually, the rosewood is a EEb contralto or BBb contrabass. The contrabass does go to low C.

I know the difference between basses and contras.
You can special order Bb BASS clarinets from Selmer in rosewood, but they only offer to low Eb. I am wondering if they have a model 37 (bass clarinet to low C) in rosewood.
The group I am joining is the National Guard, David. You wanna come too??!?! YAY!. lol. Anyway, they seem like they will buy me whatever I want. They already got my friend a $20,000 tuba, I think I deserve a low C rosewood bass clarinet. Or I'll ask for a Wurlitzer. :P

The Model 37 has gone the way of the dodo bird, and last time I spoke with Elkhart about rosewood as an option, they indicated it was only for the contra models. Nothing is indicated for that wood for the new model 65 and 67, but hey, market demand can cause a company to do all sorts of interesting things.
Cheers.

Yep, the 37 will soon be no more, and from what I hear the new model is not the answer. The Privilege may turn out to be an Edsel, or perhaps the examples displayed in NY were problematic. Only time will tell.
I spoke with a superb player who played the Selmer day setup in NY and who sounds amazing on his 37 (and on bflat clarinet and on all the saxes). He is not changing to the new model. He did say that the keywork is improved on the new model, however.
For those of you who heard the performance at Selmer Day, you heard a model 37 being played, not a Privilege.
Best to snap up a 37 now if that is what you want. Apparently the 'improvements' in the new model include changing the bore design sufficiently to alter the great sound of the 37 into something else.
I tried half a dozen 37s in Elkhart last summer and they were all outstanding. That model has been improved within the last 2 years. A new one now will get you one of the best instruments ever built.
If you want it in rosewood, paint it.

I imagine that for the right amount of money, Selmer will be willing to make a rosewood model for you. Even if it's possible, isn't it better to go try a lot of grenadilla basses and choose the best one? The chance that the rosewood bass will be better than all grenadillas you can try is slim imho. Also, why do you want a rosewood bass clarinet anyway? I would go with grenadilla even if rosewood was a regular option.

Well, the guard has a nice Prestige waiting for me already, but they will give me basically whatever I want. So I'll be greedy and have our tax money buy me a new horn anyway. :P (The guard band is given a bunch of money and told to spend it on whatever they want, so they get all kinds of cool stuff)
Currently, I play a really nice Selmer 37 that is owned by the University, but I have been the primary player of it since we got it! So it's mine... until May. :/ I did get to play the Privilage at Clarinetfest. It was a nice horn. I think I like the Selmers over the Buffets.
I just wanna be different, and I've always dreamed of owning a rosewood clarinet. I wish to have my own contra, but since I have no real use for one at the moment, I would like to have a rosewood bass.
The Selmer website used to list the rosewood bass to Eb a while back, it was kinda hidden in their menus. Of course the site has changed. heh

Well, I was going to join the National Guard so that they could order me a new Selmer Model 37 rosewood Bb bass clarinet with range to low C ---- but now that:
(a) they don't make 37s any more;
(b) the new model may be inferior to the one it replaced; and
(c) they may not make ANY of them out of rosewood ----
I'm going to retract my offer. The National Guard will have to do without me. Sorry, Bonnie Sue --- you're on your own...........
Regretfully,
DS

Contragirl, I have the utmost of confidence that our nation will be safe in your capable hands, just as long as you don't play on any nasty old brown-box Ricos...........

When I called today, WWBW had two Selmer 37s left, and I'm ordering one of them tomorrow. If they're that scarce everywhere else, there may not be much time left to pick one up. I've seen a bunch of pictures for the 67, it definitely has beautiful keywork. I find it curious, though, that all the reviews of the 67/Privelege from ClarinetFest (they _are_ the same instrument, yeah?) were positive, and now that they're officially on market, we start hearing that they're not all that great.

Becareful with that order Igloo Bob.
A few months ago, when I bought my Buffet bass clarinet from WW&BW. I also tried a few Selmer 37s. One of the Selmers was just horrible. Stuffy low notes and throat notes and all sorts of other problems. I'm guessing no one bought that one and it's probably one of the two they have left (unless they received another shipment from Selmer by now, which I doubt).
If you are already going to spend $6,500 (or whatever those 37s cost now) why don't you spend a little more (little only comparing with the clarinet price...) money and go to the store, or order both and return the worse one.

Thanks for the warning, Clarnibass. I actually did ask the guy about ordering both and returning one, but he said because they were on outlet, once you buy they won't take it back. Certainly don't want to spend that much on a lemon, though. I'll be flying south after I graduate from HS in a month, could try them on the way down. The guy I talked to made it sound like there might not be any left in 2 months, but I suppose he's supposed to do it that way. I'll check other music stores as well before buying, I'll be in Texas during the summer and Brook Mays definitely sold them before. I wonder if the 67 meeting with failure will cause the 37 to be brought back, or the 67 to undergo some design changes...
