OK boychicks and girlchicks, anyone hear anything 'bout the St Louis Symphony principal clar. audition.
I heard that there are 2 sessions...one earlier this month and another going on now or within a few days.
Will they announce the winner on April 1st? (sic)

Are they actually having this audition? I was going to do this, but the very same day I got info form them was the day the huge article in the NY Times appeared about them being on strike and cancelling 3 previous auditions. So, I didn't want to waste my time if they were just going to cancel.
Anyone know if this is even happening?

Yes, a friend of mine auditioned on the first date. She said no one on that day was advanced to the next round. I believe there were 2 other audition dates scheduled, and then the finals.

The prelims are now over. The Semis are scheduled for the 4th of April and the finals I believe are a week later.
A bit of an expensive audition to take with three plane flights. Supposedly all finalists get reimbursed for their travel....
I can't imagine the orchestra having an easy time reimbursing many finalists for travel after their orchestra strike. They already had to reimburse horn and bass players when they canceled auditions a few months ago.

Sara Miller, the Arts writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentioned in her column on Sunday, May 8, 2005 that the orchestra had selected Scott Andrews, presently 2nd clarinet in the Boston Symphony, for the Principal Clarinet position to replace the recently retired George Silfies.

Wow...I Studied with Scott a couple years ago, but haven't kept up with his auditions after the Philly finals.
I wonder how the pay scale compares to Boston and if he will accept the position. If so, that means that the BSO will have a 2nd spot open...hmmmmm.

I think Principals negotiate their own salary in St. Louis. I may be wrong, but I think there is a negotiated amount that a Principal must earn, but that they are free to individually negotiate with the orchestra's management for a rate higher than the mandatory minimum set by the collective barganing agreement.
