From The New Langwill Index:

Ziegler, I. WWI fl Wien 1821-p1895.

1821 workshop established by (1) Johann Joseph senior (b Komorn / Hungary 1795; d Wien 16 March 1858); 1821 obtained trading privilege; 1830 experiments with metal clarinet mouthpieces and metal reeds (this invention reported in 1840); 1837 supplied Wien Hoftheater with clarinets and bassoons; 1845 supplied 30 regiments in Austria. 1840 Fahrbach reported that his flutes and more recently his clarinets had achieved a European reputation and were exported all over the world, and that most recently he had been busy with the improvement of the bassoon; built a flute descending to low G for Terschak, who throughout his career used a 16k flute by him; 1858 on his death succeeded by his son (2) Johann Baptist junior (b Wien 1824; d ibid 3/10 January 1879); 1879 his foreman M. Laussmann proprietor; 1889 Ignaz Lutz proprietor; active until p1895. According to Hanslick (see Exner), it was the excellence of his traditionally designed flute (widely known as the 'Ziegler flute' or 'Ziegler-system' flute) that had prevented the adoption in Austria of the Boehm system. See Gontershausen for 1855 price list. See also S. Knechtl.

A 16K gold flute descending to low G. It must have weighed a ton and been long enough to use for a clothesline.
