Ok...I finally got a Manasse cd...the 3 concerto one.
I am very very very impressed! He's fabulous!
I did a search on the board and only found one reference to his age, and that was JJM saying something like, "I can't reveal his age, but he's older than he looks."
JJM...can you give us a decade even? Is he in his 30's or 40's???

He was 14 when he won the ICA competition in 1979. I guess that would put him about 39 or 40 now.
Get his two von Weber CDs. They're older (1989 or so) and his sound is a little less refined than the CD you got, but it's still glorious.
Yesterday I ordered a James Cohn tone poem CD that has Manasse performing Cohn's 2nd Clarinet Concerto, the "Evocations." Just found out recently it existed. So his recordings aren't limited to just the ones with his name in big letters on the cover.

Jon is 40. I'm pretty sure about that as he's a year younger than I am. He was the only Clarinetist in High School in a competition to beat me - I hadn't heard him play before, but afterwards hearing him I thought "yeah, he's got me"!. Jon still holds the record as the youngest winner of the ICA competition at 14, and I hold it as the youngest teacher of a winner (was 28, student was 16).
He was a student of David Weber. Brilliant player - always musical and tasteful. I really like his sound too.

Wow, David, I finally clicked on your name and went to your page. Wish I wasn't on dialup so I could download some of your stuff. If only JM could touch you, you must be an amazing player yourself.
(Okay, after reading your bio, I guess that's like saying Perlman's a pretty good violinist, but he's no Stern... no offense intended...)
Also a couple years shy of 40 here. Looks like we're all contemporaries.

JM didn't touch me, he beat me 
It was in High School, my sound was like crap back then - College completely changed it as I had a much better teacher. Manesse was already with Weber even back then.
Ya know, the Perlman analogy reminds me of a night at the Apollo Theater. Lena Horne was a contestant one night and she got beaten. Was hard to believe that Lena would have been beaten by another singer, but that night there was another "very good singer".......

Hi All;
Jon Manasse is in fact 40, but will probably always look 28. He has amazing energy and enthusiasm for anything "clarinet."
We continue to work side by side in NYC, and he's a joy to sit next to and hear. Our constant chatter about all things "clarinet" sometimes catches the attention of the Maestros, but, so far, we've never been fired!
I highly recommend his CDs, and hope you too can enjoy his charming playing live.

He's an awesome player. I saw him live with the Arlington Symphony outside DC and I got to meet him because my old teacher was principal clarinetist with them. He played the Mozart and the third movement was glorious. What a talent.
