Hi,
I need some help tweaking my "vintage" R-13 clarinet serial # in the 43000 series I love this horn. I had an overhaul done but am not satisfied with the way it plays yet. I need an expert clarinet repair person to check it out. Someone on this list must know someone wonderful in the D.C area, please.
Who do the Washington D.C/ MD clarinet players take the clarinets to?

You might check out Tony Valenti 703-780-4322. (I hesitated to let you in on this secret, as he is already far too busy). Lee Lachman 301-345-3389 has also done very nice work for me.

I can heartily recommend Lee Lachman (see previous post); he repadded my alto sax and quickly located a problem with my bari sax, all at a very reasonable price. Both horns play like new!

Tony and Lee are both very good. Lee gets the work done quicker. With Tony you might have to call him at some point and make sure he hasn't put your horn on the back burner (figuratively speaking) where it will sit until you tell him you absolutely have to have it back tomorrow. Then you might get it back in another week or two. For this reason I usually go to Lee. But Tony is a great repairman. But he can be slooooowww.

Having had all of my instruments service by Mr. Valenti, I would definitely recommend him. I have no experience with the others mentioned. BUT, I would heed the advice posted: he is very slow unless you explicitly tell him it's urgent. He completely overhauled my instrument (including adjusting some keywork) this summer and it only took a couple of weeks. I told him I had to have it before the beginning of the school year. I also gave him an Eb to work on and it took 9 months...granted, I said there were no time constraints. Never the less, he does excellent work and charges very reasonably. I recall him charging me 30% what other people/stores wanted.
