About a year ago I stopped playing clarinet because I started college and just couldn't find time for it. Now, of course, I miss it dearly. A good friend of mine plays clarinet in the university orchestra and they are in desperate need of a clarinetist -- he is the only one! Now I have a few months to get my butt in gear to see if I can get back up to playing well again and then meet with the music director to see if he can place me.
Before "quitting" I had actually only been playing for about 14 months, but I was pretty good -- my teacher said I progressed faster than any other student he's ever had, and that I had the tone of someone who had been playing their whole life. After about 10 months of playing I auditioned for a band and the auditioner said I sounded like Eddie Daniels, and that was a big boost to my ego. I know, however, that my technique and articulation left much to be desired, because I just didn't have the experience in that area.
Anyway, if anyone wants to comment on that, feel free.
But here's my question. I haven't touched my clarinet since August (which was the last time I was home) and I remember there being a problem with the topjoint and the mouthpiece connection--it was really wobbly, and I had been using a piece of paper inserted between the joint so that it would stay still. Is this a problem with the topjoint or with the mouthpiece? Should the mouthpiece be recorked? About how much do recorkings go for? I ask because the mp is a Hite Premiere which can be bought brand new for probably $20-$25.
Thanks for any help or advice

Recorking's aren't that much at all. I'd get it recorked if you like that mouthpiece. It's often dificult to find a mouthpiece that you like and there's no use gambling when you can just recork the one you have.
Other than that, welcome back and toot away!

If I sounded like Eddie Daniels I wouldn't be quick to change mouthpieces. Some people search for mouthpieces their whole lives and sound like a sick goose.
Have it recorked at the next opportunity.
A temporary "fix" can be achieved by wrapping the cork area with as much teflon plumbers tape as you need to stop the wobbling.
