Can anyone suggest any good recordings of the Stamitz concerto? I have been asked to perform this with a local ensemble. I'm not actually that enthralled with the piece and was hoping to be inspired.

Which one? Sabine Meyer has recorded plenty of them (or perhaps all?) and Kalman Berkes has also done two decent recordings which contain some of them.

The Sabine Meyer version is way too fast and way to embellished for my taste. If you can get a copy of David Glazer's version. I assume you are referring to Karl Stamitz Concerto #3 in Bb as it is the best known.

David Glazer, there's a name we don't hear too often anymore.

David Glazer may have been forgotten but his Stamitz is wonderful and I've a number of clarinetists who agree thanks to a phono to CD transcription I made.
Now Sabine Meyer on EMI Classics #7 548422 reminds me of some arrogant college (Julliard/Curtis) student trying to shove their great techinque down my throat will little regard to music. However, she IS a wonderful clarinet player, just listen to her Stamitz volume II, her basset horn piece is a classic bar none.

Sue
The late John Denman recorded all the Stamitz and Spohr Concertos.
It's on casette & not available thru stores.
It can be obtained directly from his wife, the world famous pianist, Paula Fann., Tucson, AZ
If you'd like, conctact me direct and I'll get in touch with her.
regards
dennis
