Any suggestions for good symphonic band pieces with good Eb parts?

The William Byrd Suite has a gorgeous Eb part. I had to play parts of it transposed for Bb.

ETA This holds true even for Eb alto clarinet. We don't have any Eb altos in my band, but the alto saxophones have to play that part, so I'm familiar with it.

We played a band arr. of a Wagner, Lohengrin ??, with a pitchwise- challenging Eb [sop] part [with the piccolos !!, hang in there!]. For Eb Alto, our Grainger of Irish Tune and some other band arrs. of classics will be keeping me alert, shortly. This "nerd" horn DOES have some worthwhile parts ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

An alto clarinet with a worthwhile part. The apocalypse is nigh.

What approximate level of band? And is it ok if the "good" parts are also very dangerous?

Do you mean Eb soprano or Eb alto?

I had to play the Eb soprano part on Ron Nelson's "Rocky Point Holiday". The part was certainly challenging. There wasn't much in the way of solos, but it was fun to play.

Suite of Old American Dances - Robert Russell Bennett
Symphony for Band (Symphony No. 6) - Vincent Persichetti
Slava! - Leonard Bernstein
Overture to "Candide" - Leonard Bernstein/Beeler or /Grundman
Candide Suite - Leonard Bernstein/Clare Grundman
Shepherd's Hey - Percy Aldridge Grainger
Canzona - Peter Mennin

I can probably think of more, but I need to go to bed. Sorry. lol

El Salon Mexico by Copland
Daphnis et Chloe by Ravel (damn that's an awesome piece.....try to get the Air Force Band recording of it if you haven't heard it done by a band)

I think that's it for now....

Try Lincolnshire Posey. It's got a nice duet in the canon section. It can be fun to do.

Diz- and I've heard La Mer by the US Air Force Band as well....

Lawrence Odom, IMHO one of the best arrangers to have existed for wind ensemble, did them for the band.

They're actually quite nice- the choir they have for Daphnis really does the part justice in this particular ensemble setting.

Adam Gorb - Yiddish Dances, reasonably under the fingers but the Eb part is exposed almost on every note it plays, prominent solos in almost every movement. Fun piece to play.

Woolfendon - Firedance, not exposed in the same way but a really fun part to play. (actually I'll put most of Guy's music in that category)

Both of these need a decent band.

Many of the pieces being written by British composers for wind band have interesting Eb parts.

There's a great fast solo line in Goldsmith's The Wind and The Lion. Check it out. It's somewhere in the middle... my, what a gorgeous piece of music. It's always fun when you're holding an eefer and the director says "at this part SCREAM!" Yikes.

There's a great band arrangement of Bolero...

Aegean Festival is fun, but of course the Bb gets the big solo...

I would agree with all the Grainger and Bernstein as well.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Diz - sorry, I should have said: Eb soprano.

EEBaum - it's an amateur band, but a pretty high standard. And by "good" I meant either exposed solos or a part with lots happening, even if you're just doubling with others.

Clare ... I played in a marching band for 6 years during high school (in Sydney). First year I played bass then decided it not a good marching instrument, then I played Solo Clarinet (which was cool) but I spent the last 4 years playing the baby ... mainly because it was lightweight and the parts were invariably interesting. Often quite tricky and skitish in places.

These eefer parts were fun to play with the wind ensemble i'm in:

Mozart........."Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" ( 4 movements)
Mozart.........Marriage of Figaro
Mozart.........Overture To Cosi Fan Tutte
Grieg............Norwegian Dance No. 2
Ravel............Bolero
Wyman.........Tarantella
Bizet.............Gypsy Dance from Carmen
Krommer........Partia in Bb for Winds, Op 45 #3
Mussgorgsky........Night on the Bare Mountain

Then, there were the Oboe parts I played on C clarinet .

Eefer is a kick to play in band and has its place (on a peg). Disappointingly, the horn has 2 big things working against it. 1) In a band setting it's primarily a color instrument with 95% of its parts traditionally doubled in the flutes, piccs and high winds. I worked in several bands where the section was short Bbs, sometimes a pitifully manned 5 or 6, config. 2-1-2, 2-2-2 but still insisted on a full time eefer player .... no comment; I got paid. And, 2) The lion's share of repertoire (i.e. Candide, Slava, On the Town, Roman Carnival, American Salute) are solo snippets and melodies transcribed, adapted or arranged for band from orchestra, string orchestra and chamber groups.

Regardless, the eefer gloriously shines under the band master's pen. I find it interesting while skimming the thread names such as Grainger, Bennett and at least one mention of Nelson kept popping up. My compliments to these folks .... band people KNOW outstanding band literature.

Here's a laundry list of concert band pieces with Eb sop clar flying fingers, thrills and chills. Caution: a number of them fly pretty fast and loose and for the advanced player; a few flat out dog hard. However, on the bright side, they'll keep you off the street and in a practice room (where we all belong anyway) ... v/r Ken

-Celebrations -- John Zdechlik

-The Last Days of Pompeii (ballet mvts.) -- John Phillip Sousa

-J'ai ete au bal -- Donald Grantham

-Divertimento in F -- Jack Stamp

-Fantasies on a Theme by Hydan -- Norman Dello Joio

-American Pageant -- Thomas Knox

-Festival Variations – Claude Smith

-Paris Sketches -- Martin Ellerby

-Santa Fe Saga -- Morton Gould

-Lads of Wamphrey March -- Percy Grainger

-Trittico -- Vaclav Nelhybel

-Symphony #3 -- Vittorio Giannini

Tunbridge Fair by Walter Piston
Mannin Veen by Hadyn Wood
An Original Suite by Gordon Jacob

Only a small eb solo in the middle of Mannin Veen but all three are quite challenging, lots of very technical fast altissimo runs. Lots of exposed blending and intonation headaches too, especially in the Jacob piece.

I also agree with some of the earlier mentioned pieces, Giannini symph. 3, Perichetti Symph 6, Lads of Wamphey. We have played those in the last 2 years, all very difficult but fun eb parts.

Another vote here for Overture to Candide. I also remember a tune we played in high school symphony band that I believe was by Ron Nelson called Aspen Jubilee and it had a nice eefer part.

Three City Blocks by John Harbison has TWO Eb clarinet parts, and they both get to wail.

I forgot to mention, last year we also played an arrangement of Glazunov's Scenes de ballet, arranged by Kemble Stout. It has several very prominent eb solos (written to cover the violin solos in the original piece) and is a beautiful piece.

In May, I did the US premiere of "Scent" for Eb clarinet and wind band. It is a very fun piece as the composer tries to describe musically various scents such as coffee and a flower garden.

The Eefer part is a BEAR as you might imagine with the cadenza having some very interesting bits. The part covers the whole range of the Eefer and it really is a show piece for the instrument, including some parts on the lower range of the instrument. The audience really enjoyed it too.

Do you know if the eb solo part for Scent can be purchased separately? It would be fun to give it a look without buying the entire band arrangement from Molenar.

I think it is a package deal as I received the solo part at the same time as the accompanying band parts arrived.

The band parts are actually quite interesting too and there's some challenging stuff for the low brass and percussion too.

The audience reception was great to the piece. Certainly a challenge for the Eefer player.
