Guide to Dating Selmer Clarinets (defunct web site)
Author: paulwl
Date:   2004-02-04 00:11

Has anybody visited this now-offline site and saved the text material thereon?

The author, one Kevin Foster, had some thought-provoking theories on these instruments, one being that the published list put out by Selmer itself is probably off by about 2 years (ie, the instruments are 2 years newer).

If anyone happens to have saved Kevin's info or know where he can be contacted, please do chime in. Thanks.

paulwl. I don't know, however I have to say that I feel for you. I noticed that you've been looking for that site or information from it for a very long time. I hope your search comes out successful. I almost have a picture of you carrying a whip at your side riding a german motorcycle with a parchment in your hand describing the last known address of the maker moderator . . .

Hi,

Sherman Friedland is a pretty well informed Selmer Clinician that might be able to help you locate the site.

He can be found at http://clarinet.cc/ and might have the information you need.

paulwl-- I would be interested in what you find out as well, given that I would also like to find out a date for an instrument I have.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Grenadilla." Hey, I like the sound of that.

I wish I did have that URL. Unfortunately I lost even that in a hard drive crash in December. I'm beginning to think I dreamed it all.

Any leads will of course be posted hereto as soon as I dig them up.

I haven't been checking the messages, but did you try the Klarinet mailing list? They may be able to help you. Also maybe if you post in another non-clarinet related board it may help to jog someone's memory who may have stumbled across it (maybe a sax board or the like). Just trying to give you ideas of other ways to look for it.

paulwl -

I ckecked the Wayback Machine http://www.archive.org/web/web.php , which archives snapshots of the Web back to 1996, but couldn't find anything about a Kevin Foster Selmer site. Even searches on Kevin and Selmer, or Foster and Selmer, came up empty.

Please let us know everything you have about the site, and maybe we can locate an archive.

Thanks.

Peobody Conservatory and Sherman Friedland no doubt

(see how many catch that allusion)

Mark could start one if he wants to.

Just ask for the serial, model, brand and purchase date (or other purchase proof.) from the BB users.

The "Official" Selmet numbers are at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Selmer.html. What we're talking about here are surmises (backed up by some pretty good knowledge) of changes to this list. As was noted, it took one person a lot of time to try and research the validity of the serial numbers. Just doing it "by guess and by golly" would be a disservice.
