i'm thinking of getting another A clarinet.
Have any of you tried teh Yamaha SEV? What do you think? How does it compare to an R13?
I found a place in NY that's selling it for about $2000.

My instructor said he almost bought a yamaha A clarinet (coming from a buffet man). Said it was one of the most beautiful sounding instruments he ever played.
Go try it. If you like it, buy it.

Retired, playing more sax than clarinet, but still playing clarinet and still loving it!

I found the sound to be a bit broader especially in the upper clarion for the several SEVs I tried compared to R13 which is probably more focused. Not sure if its a general trend across all SEVs or only in those I tried. Happy instrument shopping..

I've got a really nice Yamaha "A" SE. It plays with a very even scale. I would not discount trying the Yamaha.

do you think they ALL have higher quality wood than Buffets? I would love a buffet, but are there any new R13s that aren't made with scrapwood?

Excuse me? I've seen new Buffets, and don't quite know what to make of such a disparaging statement ...

I agree with Mark. I was going to respond to your post and tell you buy what feels, sounds best to you. I'm not a member of the so called Buffet mafia because I have a Leblanc LL, and double walled SILVER KING as well as a B & H 2-20, that are all excellent players.....I was very selective in what I bought.....that's the bottom line......Go test them....then decide....and if you want to slam clarinet manufacturers, do so to the ones that really deserve it. Buffet makes a great product. And if you would, explain "scrapwood"... Thanks
