I was browsing on Jeanne-Inc and some pieces were labeled "out-of-print". One piece in particular I noticed labeled out-of-print was the Howell Sonata, which I really enjoy and was looking to purchase (not today, but at some point)... what exactly does this mean? Will these pieces never be printed again? If so, that seems like a shame. Can anything be done to get pieces like this back into print? Just curious...

There are no more copies left with the publisher. Any copies currently in stores will not be able to be re-ordered after they're sold.

Depends on demand. If there's enough demand sometimes the publisher will make another printing run.

 See above.

If you can find a copy and you'd like to make your own legal copy then many times a publisher will let you for a nominal fee. Just contact the publisher (or rights owner - the rights may have been transferred) and ask permission and how much.

Mark ... good advice (as always). I had a very recent experience of contacting Chappel (publishers) to obtain permission to photocopy an out-of-print vocal score ... they gave me free reign, so long as the photocopies were logged, and then destroyed after the performance (there was no charge for this).

I just went to the Boosey & Hawkes site and they still show the work in their catalog, FWIW.

 Best regards,
