On Sunday, for the first time, I heard a performance of Robert Fuchs' "Quintet for Clarinet and Strings" (in E-flat Major), at one of concerts in the Eastern Shore (Md.) Chamber Music Festival. J. Lawrie Bloom (Chicago Symph) was the clarinetist and played impressively. A recording mic was in place, but whether anything will come of it, I surely don't know.

Surfing online, I have found just two CDs that include this piece (though there may be more and I didn't find them). One is a Hyperion recording, with Thea King the clarinetist and the Britten String Quartet. (Also on disk: Romberg, Quintet in E-flat Major for clar, 2 violas, cello; Stanford, Two Fantasies for Clar and String Quartet). The other is a Denon recording, with Paul Meyer and the Carmina String Quartet. (Also on disk: Weber, Quintet for Clar and Strings in B-flat Major)

Any opinions re the merits (or demerits) of one or the other?
