If the trumpet is louder than the oboe, then all the equal harmonics of the oboe will be rendered mute and only those unique to the oboe outside of the trumpets harmonic set will be audible.
So you want an oboe that will merge with the trumpet and use it's enhanced harmonic range to own the resulting sound when trumpet and oboe clash.
The oboe's ownership of sound is a feature that one should prefer over brightness/darkness. The oboe can become a dominant force that can either stick out or merge and give greater life to the the music that is happening.
If the trumpet section was playing something spectacularly triumphant, when you join in wouldn't you want your oboe to take on the characteristics of a tweeter and channel the trumpets so that the oboe does not just add to the fanfare, but becomes the dominant fixture of the sound.
I think that's the most endearing feature of the oboe.
