If you make reeds, you can re-use the staples. So writing on the cork becomes problematic.
I write on the cane, right above the thread. I find if I use a "Sharpie" brand marker, the numbers will smear easily when I soak the reed. Instead, I've been using lab markers from VWR Scientific - they work wonderfully.
Before I found the VWR markers, I would simply wrap a short winding of thread (of a different color) around the base thread. Lots of permutations with (base thread color) x (2nd thread color) x (# windings of 2nd thread).
