Re: A Technique for Making Clean Attacks

Ohsuzan, after trying out your method, it seems that i have nothing more to say than to agree with you that it is a universal thing, but is taught in a different angle all around the world, and most importantly, it works. And probably i have been doing this all the while without myself realising it. I find that if you don't 'gasp' but 'breath' and do not pause in between a breath and a tone, with the 'breathe (through the mouth) deeply into the midsection.' idea, it almost ensures 100% clean attacks, even in soft passages.

Recently i have been breathing loudly before entries and one of my mentors has suggested to me that such an action builds up muscle pressure which aint good for playing. Actually, my problem was that i was gasping, and it was apparent that it created tension in my oral cavity. One suggested solution for me was that since physical movement of air tends to be difficult and abstract to understand, i was asked to breath silently (i.e. Arnold Jacob brass 50% capacity idea.), and certainly the relaxed nature brought to a whole new realisation of things.

Of course i think there is something to do with embouchure too, but i can't really tell. Can someone point out what is necesarry in the embouchure to ensure a safe attack? Or is it more related to reed position or so forth?

Howard
