Learning approach

... you should see my band practice copies, they're a learning experience indeed !

... technically challenged student here, my starting practice copy is chock-a-block with penciled technical notes, such as REb, LEb, X (forked F), RAb, *do Bb scale (incidentals in key of A-flat) etc. etc. There are highlighted key changes when there are lots in the piece (6!) and additional spiky markings around fz's in piano passages, and gentle little circles around subito p's

... wait, stay with me, there's more, i add my secret code of inflexion marks for musical expression, and i put in vertical alignment lines to count the beat in bars with difficult rhythms, and then i get really technical by adding Ta-teh-ti tonguing syllabics at tricky interpretive spots

... and yes, you guessed it, there they are, boldly magnified 100x ^^^ breath marks ^^^ some with little hats (let out a puff), some in boats (take in a whiff) and some with double hats (exhalation purge)

... hoboy, my practice-rehearsal copy is a right proper mess !!! which is exactly how i feel with this one particular challenging (but quite wonderful) christmas arrangement for band

... one good thing keeps reminding me to keep my chin up, oops, down, this year i'm making progress at this particular arrangement by a chap with ASCAP after him, last year my eyes completely glazed over while my fingers went on strike, director's lightning baton zapped me stone cold

Tsheesh, moi? rehearse 16ths in dreaded 4 flats in 6/8 at annoyingly slow moderato interruptus with those snickery flutes, wot with that still awkward left Eb and how on earth does one finger left Aflat to left Eflat ? oh, yeah, i see the way it's supposed to be done, but my pinky isn't bent out of shape enough yet ... oh no! not the hammer! pleeeze, don't hurt me!

... Oops, missed that forte crescendo, i'm playing gutless monotone on a wimpppy reed

... yup, it's a bit easier this week than last week, making good progress, i erased the reminder yesterday to play Ab not A natural in one run

... as i practice and get better i erase the stuff i manage to program into auto pilot, and keep only those notes to remind me what i still have to do on manual override, or on the hoof as ohsusan says, reindeer everywhere these days, why don't i volunteer to do the jingle bells instead ?
... oh, ah, um ... count how many bars rest just to jingle eight bars and then that's it, finale fermata?

... might be able to erase more mess same time next year

... looking forward to the day when only specific director's notes are on my scores

... meanwhile, 10 years' worth of pencils and erasers are on my christmas list while i learn to integrate the ... technical stuff

... the musical edition is playing perfectly in my head, sounds great!
