Community music is my favourite kind of music!
Community members are the participants and the audience. They are usually a very appreciative audience. I love that people from all walks of life come together through music. When I first started playing clarinet, I basically learnt by sitting in a band (I would never have done that much practice off my own back!) I sat next to one of the head pain management specialists in Australia. Who would have thought??
If it weren't for community music, I probably wouldn't be playing the oboe right now. I had started learning, but then my band needed an oboe, and I thought I could rise to the challenge.
I have put students, both adult and younger, through community ensembles, and they absolutely relish the opportunity. I love the non-judgemental nature of it, and if you find one without all the politics (which we were lucky to find), it is a good experience.
Incidentally, we have an Australian friend staying with us at the moment, she has been on exchange in the US and is passing through on her way home. Where did we meet her? Community band!
