The biggest danger with close micing is key noise (clicks and pad slap) - not just oboes but other woodwinds. Get a wind 5tet or larger and there's a typewriter in the room (but without the bell or ratchet). On saxes you can hear sticky pads and the player humming during growls.
When 'cellists are miced up close you can hear their left hand fingers hammering down and pianos are accompanied by what sounds like someone knocking or thumping on the door, especially when played in the top 8ves - and if the player is a bit heavy footed with the pedals that gets picked up.
And then there's Glenn Gould! If back then electronic pianos sounded exactly like acoustic concert grands, then they could plug straight into them to hear what he played but not the player, great though he was.
