Yes, my knee jerk reaction was to Illinois, Susan. Then the next day, Florida. Then Illinois...
It is mostly about my partner being comfortable as he will be the one completing a Master's in band conducting. I have a natural attraction to the Midwest, which might seem strange as I've only been around the states twice! But I need to be able to fit in comfortably as well.
So, I will definitely email you about your experiences, Cooper, although mine will be a different situation to yours! I have not had many lessons although I have played for 6 years now. I will be taking a couple of undergrad performance and orchestration units and playing in some ensembles. While that experience still needs to be positive and I need an oboe professor to understand our situation, I think I am likely to gain something out of most places and teachers.
I have done limited research online regarding living in these places, and while I haven't seen anything too concerning about U-C (except the crime rate being higher than usual) there seem to be a lot of swinging voters in Gainesville, those who have always lived there saying its great and those who are not locals completely disillusioned with the place (no jobs, lots of homeless people, HUGE party atmosphere with the students, gas and rents are expensive, etc).
Also, as my partner is specialising in band conducting, Illinois, given its amazing band history, probably has a nose in front at this point in time.
Thanks for your replies, Susan and Cooper!
