All your accounts are wise, but they might well be for the wrong reasons. The lumber industry has significant studies showing that temperature variances alone (even sudden) have no effect on wood expansion/contraction. However, with temperature changes come significant changes in humidity: these have huge consequences on wood expansion/contraction.

This being said, temperature does work on the metal screws and sleeves in the instrument, though cold should be beneficial rather than harmful.

So the advice of using the damp-it or any other means of humidification is surely the best you can get. Oiling (again, please read the thread) has been shown to be fully useless, though waxing (as prescribed by Laubin) with a feather can help prevent moisture loss when the air dries up.
