My first oboe when I came back (affectionately named Barbara, hence my old blog Barbara the oboe) was a plastic top joint Royal. It took me about a solid year and a half of playing on it before I finally felt any difference between what I could expect from the wood and the plastic, and it had to do with resistance and response. The plastic had more response, but more resistance. Very minute, and not a big deal either way, since I realized that I was compensating for it with my reeds.
I also recently heard that Meg Cassell of Good Tone Guild is playing on a plastic top joint Hiniker. However, I don't think Tom Hiniker is making his topjoints out of actual Plexiglass but some other material which is clear.
