hey mel

thanks for the reply

i dont know what stage of young musician of the year you're at, but well done to have got so far already, and good luck if you've yet further to go. my orchestra was involved with the concerto final of young musician of the year about 4 or 5 years ago when nicola benedetti took the prize on violin. indeed, we're about to do a two week tour of china with nicola as soloist. this is my second tour of china, and, curiously, i teach a chinese oboist at the rsamd who is from beijing, which will be our first concert venue. i am hoping to perhaps even meet her parents at the concert. could be a nice moment for east/west relations!
you can't go wrong with mozarts oboe quartet - it's so much better than the concerto. don't fall into the trap of playing the 2nd movement too slowly. it needs momentum from a discernable pulse, but is often played at a tempo whereby the performer is merely wallowing in the mistaken belief that it makes it more meaningful. it's so beautifully crafted already by mozart that the juxtaposition of the oboe against the strings is quite spine-tingling. if you're looking for great chamber music for oboe/cor anglais there's the c major divertimento for oboe, viola and bass and the cor anglais quartet, both by michael haydn. i've an amazing recording of them with holliger on cd, who makes them seem much less challenging than they are! i played both the haydn quartet and mozart's adagio for cor anglais for my bbc club debut recital, shortly after i got the job. i'm still hoping for a few more suggestions from american composers for oboe works. bobo, one of the board members here, made a great suggestion of eric ewazen, which i was able to listen to online, played extremely well by julie ann giacobassi. i think she plays for the san francisco symphony orchestra.
anyway, that said, keep up the good work and good luck with everything. james
