I acquired a used crappy bass clarinet recently.
It plays ok except in the clarion (single register) baring in mind Ive had it for a day and never played bass extensively before.
Anyway, I was cleaning it today when I looked inside the neck and saw loads of tarnish and gunk, I tried swabbing to no effect.
Can anyone recommend a suitable way to clean the neck?
Im thinking of copying this: http://www.shwoodwind.co.uk/HandyHints/Crook_cleaning.htm
Any advice?
Thanks

Vinegar should work. I used to use a bath of vinegar water and dish detergent.
Most shops use some sort of acid bath. Some are worse for the metal than others. Some can completely dissolve metal that is forgotten and left for a few days. I use a product that won't do that.
For mouthpieces I sometimes use denture cleaner. It is slower but the smell left behind is less offensive.

You can buy bottles of Kilrock kettle descaler from Robert Dyas that will make light work of the mineral deposits encrusting the inside of the crook. If there's no tenon cork on it or it can be sacrificed, then make a solution of hot water and descaler and soak it (use a glass bowl) until the mineral deposits are all dissolve, then rinse it well once done.
