Why does everyone think that "darker" or "lower" means more projection? Usually in a concert hall, it's the lower overtones that fall away, just as when you're riding in a car and listening to a mahler symphony, it's usually the bass instruments that fade first. Thus, Bass boost.
I find that higher overtones are more prone to project the distance. Granted, we need all of them, but it's harder to get lower or "the darker overtones" to carry much further than 50 feet.
