I play the clarinet, and I have a sudden strong urge to begin playing all the woodwinds and get to at least intermediate level on all of them. I've begun the flute, and am quickly getting the hang of it. I'm hoping to start on the saxophone soon, and I want to get a bassoon but the local shop doesn't rent them. I prefer the sound and reportoire of the oboe over the saxophone so I'm going to begin on the oboe. The only thing that is keeping me from renting one is the price of reeds. I don't want to spend tons of money on reeds. Does anyone have any experience with synthetic reeds (such as Fibracell)? Are they OK for beginners and intermediate players?
A little side note . . . another thing that's making me feel nervous about playing the oboe is the lung pressure it takes. When I watch an oboist play it looks like they're about to burst, and at least some of the oboists I know have a lung exercise thing. Do you really have to blow as hard as it looks?
