I finally managed to adjust a reed that "worked" but was not what I wanted. It was one made in my exceedingly dry climate but at a somewhat lower altitude.
It crowed a C but was "tight"....don't know any other word to describe it. I decided to see if I could get the lower octave to come out in the crow when I blew a bit harder, which is how the reeds I learned on crowed. (pro reeds made by my teacher.)
So I took my EverDull knife and managed to scrape the tiniest amount of dust from the very outside of the tip just where it met the heart. It was a really small amount, all four of those regions. Suddenly !!! I had the lower C in the crow and the reed was still on pitch and stable. I'm just once again trying to get into oboe and dealing with physical disability, and oboe appear to be the only instrument I'm going to be able to mess with because I have a BHOB and don't have to hold it up. But I can still blow. Ten minutes on that reed last night. I'm starting to be optimistic....just want to play it for my own enjoyment, anyway.
