I skimmed through the linked article and didn't find any explanation of why the low D is "the fundamental note of [the] instrument." Could you summarize why that is the case? It seems like an arbitrary note to pick--at that point tone holes are closed 2/3 of the way down the instrument, rather than 1/2 way, or all the way.
