 Swabbing mouthpiece

I have read the one should not run your swab thru the mouthpiece.
Is this correct? What is your general practice. To swab or not to swab that is the question.

Also I have a mouthpiece brush, how should I use that?

IMO the swab is gentler than the mouthpiece brush! :)

I usually recommend cotton swabs to clean the mp, but IMO you can also just wrap the fabric of the swab around your finger and wipe the mp out with that. Once a week, rinse with tepid water (careful not to get the cork wet!).

I did a search and found a lot of advice in the following thread:

While at home I use an electric duster and on the road I use a can of air used to clean the dust from computer keyboards.

I've been a professional orchestra player for 51 years and I've swabbed my MP each and every time. Use a soft swab of course, silk is the softest. Put the swab through the barrel end and gently pull it through the front but not against the facing of the MP, pull it so it comes through the other side. Just make sure you're not using something metal as a weight. A professional MP is made of a very durable material that would probably take a billion pulls to make any difference at all, if any.

The "key" is not to "RUN" the swab, but to gently pull it through (if you use a swab it has to move through completely without any binding....if it hangs up at all, back it out). For this it is much better to use a silk swab. Just remember that quick movement across the rails (side rails AND tip rail) could cause a 'sawing' or 'filing' effect which you do not want.

P.S. I totally agree that the brushes are MUCH WORSE !!!!!

What Ed and Paul said.

Swab it like that each time and you'll never have to use a brush.
