Just wanted to say that I recently purchased the Klezmatics' "Possessed" CD and I must say it is some of the best Klezmer I have heard! Granted, I don't have that much backround in Klezmer, as I am fairly new to it, but I just fell in love with this CD! I love the rhythm and the great instrumental solos- there is some awesome bass stuff on there (I could have sworn it was a contra- it sounds too low to be a bass! but the liner notes dont lie..)
anyway, figured I'd just mention that.

Maybe it's a bass with a low C extension.
Only on a clarinet board would "bass" mean bass clarinet.

Have you heard the Klezmaics alvum "Rythm and Jews?" I love that one, and not just for the title (although even if it were a blank disc I still would have bought it!). David Krakauer is ridiculously good on clarinet and bass clarinet.

The clarinetist on 'possessed' is Matt Darriau, and he's playing a Selmer bass clarinet, low C extension indeed.
