I have no idea how you are going to get the answers to all of your questions unless Mr. Speed himself should come upon this board and respond to your post personally, but, fwiw, he definitely plays on some sort of crystal mouthpiece, or at least he was the last few times I saw him play within the past 2-3 years. (I'm assuming that you're referring to his clarinet rather than hs tenor setup.)
I don't think I can draw any direct comparisons to other players regarding his tone quality of improvisation style. All I can say is that, to me, his playing is superficially lacking in emotion but actually quite expressive somehow, in a manner that seems more reminiscent of an indie rock or even grunge aesthetic than anything directly related to jazz. Whatever, he's one of my favorite jazz reedmen, and his clarinet playing with the group Pachora is essentially what got me interested in Balkan music (well, that and Kusturica's Underground).
Honestly, I don't think that this thread will generate much in the way of responses but it's good to see a musician like Speed getting some recognition on this board.
