Mostly Balkan folk stuff. But I usually play this with an international folk dance type band, so we throw in the waltzes and polkas for variety.

What is Balkan music? I play in a big Polish band, Polkas, Obereks, Waltz, sometimes Chadash, some Ukrainian.

Cool stuff, RM...
Mostly Balkan music is the south Slavic stuff. Bulgarian, Macedonian, Albanian, Serbian, with some Greek and Turkish thrown in. Occasionally we'll toss in a Romanian or Hungarian number too.
I have done a bit of Ukrainian stuff for different gigs at times, and occasionally in our folk band we'll do some Polish stuff because our accordionist played for the Polish folkdance group for 7 or 8 years!
I almost wish I could find a "real" polka band around here to play in! That is, if I had the time! I'm sure there are some, but I have no way to know for sure how to find them!

What part of the country do you live? There are lots of bands in all areas, aside from the big 3 or 4 that tour, you just have to know where to look.

Polka is great stuff. We play some for contradances, including polka - like reels. There needs to be more polka in the world :-)

did play for years in flemish ( belgian )
dance groups , also on tour in western europe.
pOLKA, wALTZ, MAZURKA, SCOTTISH ARE ESSENTIAL PARTS OF THE MUSIC FROM AROUND 1900 TILL 1950 IN bELGIUM
We even did write down tunes from elderly people in the region. Some are very interesting and beautifull. I even have two or three with a minor middle section, very rare for this type of aabbaac music in this region.
I'll put some stuff online , as promised in another thread ( free sheet music ) before the end of august.
